Ivy on Buildings: Pretty… Until It Isn’t

Ivy looks charming, but it can pry into mortar, trap moisture, hide cracks, and invite pests. Left alone, those “green walls” turn into repair bills.

Home Insurance

  • Maintenance matters. Long-term ivy damage is often treated as deferred maintenance—not a sudden loss, so claims can be reduced or denied.

  • Paper trail helps. Before/after photos and a licensed, insured contractor make future claims stronger.

How we remove it: without wrecking your wall

  • 1. Assess & photo the site. Then if you want us to do the work send us pics.

Evaluate the area thoroughly before beginning. Capture clear photos of the affected surfaces, focusing on the extent of ivy growth and any visible damage.

  • 2. Pull down ivy gently and try to pull at as much horizontal angle as possible.

Provide us with the images of the site so we can assess the scope of work and provide an accurate estimate for removal and restoration services.

  • 3. Cut vines at the base and let them dry 1–3 weeks (they release cleanly).

Describe the item or answer the question so that site visitors who are interested get more information. You can emphasize this text with bullets, italics or bold, and add links.
  • 4. Gently remove with brushes/scrapers, no pressure washing on masonry.

Cutting the vines at the base will help them detach naturally once they dry, ensuring they release without leaving residue or causing additional damage.

  • 5. Treat roots and flag hidden issues for repointing, sealing, or paint touch-ups

  • 6. DON’T FORGET about aerial roots that may be growing in the mortar.

After ivy removal, inspect for any root systems or damage to the structure. Mark areas that need repointing, sealing, or paint to maintain the integrity of the surface.

  • 7. Document with after-photos + care tips.

Aerial roots often infiltrate mortar joints and can be overlooked. After completing the job, take detailed photos of the finished work and provide care instructions to prevent regrowth.

Where are the robot mowers?  They're coming.

Roomba’s have been around for 30 years.  Where are the robot lawnmowers?  The truth is they have been far more popular for 15+ years across the pond in Europe and are quickly gaining popularity in the states.

Here in the U.S. robot mowers have been targeted to be set up for large properties in middle america but they are moving to the city quickly (especially Chicago).  This is largely due to the fact that the technology has advanced to the point that it is simple to install now and it is easy for a homeowner to run these apps themselves.

That said, these devices are not the silver bullet for yard maintenance. They take care of the mowing, but there is still a need for weekly maintenance like trimming, weed pulling, edging, etc. Ironically, while this seems like a no-brainer for landscapers and home-owners alike it is a paradigm shift because the
lawn will be cut daily rather than weekly.  Most robot lawn mowers on the market are intended to mow the lawn everyday which results in a healthier fresh-cut look– everyday.  Because of the frequency of mowing the clippings are far less so they are not trotted into your house and the ultra-fine clippings are a great natural fertilizer.

Let’s talk about working with the grass rather than against it. For one, robot mowers are electric which is better for the environment in general and you don’t have to worry about the brown spot on your grass from spilled gasoline. Another overlooked part of daily mowing is that you are encouraging internal lawn growth.  It’s the same concept as cutting plant suckers in your vegetable garden. You want to encourage slower growing grass and cutback fast growing grass for a more uniform and green lawn.

These devices are a new fresh take on the way we maintain our lawns and it’s an exciting time for the industry.
